I have mainly been birding over the past few weeks, not waving my camera at very much, just grabbing images as they presented themselves.
So, a couple of weeks ago I stayed late at Plum Island with a couple of other birders to hear (and hopefully see) Whip-poor-wills. Well we heard plenty and saw a few sat on the roadside in the vehicle headlights...then came upon this one.
Lit by nothing more than vehicle headlights, this Whip-poor-will allowed us to approach to within 15 feet - I had to crawl back to fit it in the frame! A quick few images and we left it in peace.

Wow, a rare opportunity, and a great capture! A little more DOF would have been nice in order to get the tail in focus, but I can see your shutter speed was pretty low as it was. And ISO 3200 too! I'd take it any day!
A rare situation indeed!!!!!!!! Instead of shooting available light here I would have gone with the flash at -1/3, f/8, 1/250th, ISO 400. That would have given much more DOF, no noise and a sharp image (not that this isn't sharp). But, still a fantastic image of a bird I have nothing on!
