As I was crossing Monarch pass last weekend, a beautiful, snow covered peak to the south caught my eye. I don't remember noticing it before the many times I've been over this pass. Some map consultation and google earthing leads me to believe that I was viewing Antora Peak. Mount Ouray is also in the vicinity but I think that is too far east for the peak I was seeing (due south from the pass)

Anyway, I haven't explored that area so I think it might be a viable target this weekend. Anyone have any info, road tips for this area? Looks like Bonanza, Co is a good entry point, at least to the Antora area, and Google earth shows some interesting roads. None of my 4WD books covers this area.

never noticed myself, I have noticed Mt. Aetna though, but who hasn't, that is such a figure from Monarch Pass

I know just what peak you're talking about, Kalin, and you're right, it is Antora. I know there's a road that takes off south from the west end of Marshall Pass that can get you part way there, from where you'd pick up the CDT the rest of the way. I see those roads from the Bonanza area and they look promising, but I'd guess this time of year you'll run into either snow or mud. I don't know if Marshall Pass is even open yet. Whether or not it is would be a good indicator of what you might find in the area in general.

Thanks guys. I'll let you know if I make it down there. Good reminder about snow and mud, I guess I'm getting impatient for high country access!
