This was my first attempt to shoot an insect with my macro lens. I was walking along the woods early in the morning and noticed this fly on some grass. It didn’t seem to be inclined to move so I sat down and started taking photos. Unfortunately the wind was blowing so any good shot would be just luck. I then continued on taking some flower photos but the fly kept bothering me. I finally went back to the house and picked up some cardboard to make a three sided windbreak. Fortunately the fly was still where I left him. Unfortunately the wind had picked up and it started to rain. Having gotten this far I covered the camera with my coat and took some more photos. This was the best of the lot.
A tough catch no doubt. It seems a bit soft, but that's probably due more to the inherently shallow depth of field. I'd personally be tempted to run a bit of noise reduction on the background. Nice one!
I agree with Joel. Nikon get noisy at ISO400+ ( not the new D3 or 300 though!). Other wise a decent capture. For me the wings of these flies are so amazing I always look for them. However, easier said than don trying that much DOF under these conditions. Interesting image!!

Very nice under the circumstances, Phil. And great for a first try with the macro. Is that a water drop on its forehead?
