On the partition designated as my Photoshop Scratch disk there are several files with names "Photoshop Temp..." where the ... is a series of numbers. These are large files (some approach a gB), but the modification dates on some are quite old (2006 in one case).

Are these files doing anything except taking up space on my disk? Can I delete them without causing problems?

They're just taking up room. You can safely delete them.

Thanks John. I wonder why they would put a "feature" like that into a program.

Well, those files should be automatically deleted every time you close PS, so I'm not sure why yours are sticking around.

There occasions when Photoshop stops responding and I exit by way of operating system prompts - I bet this keeps PS from cleaning up its own debris.

I will try confirm this. Thanks again. Pete D.
