After living in Portland for 6 years, and doing plenty of hiking, I've realized I've never been out to the Gorge in Spring at its best. Last weekend on a short hike with my parents, I was amazed by all the full folilage, colors, and layering of the plants. The variety of ferns, in particular, caught my eye and so here is my take on illustrating the depth of the layering. Somewhat inspired by Ansel Adams' famous ferns shot as I was just looking at his book 'The Print' the day before. I processed this specifically focused on white balance, and composition using the light and dark areas, and to focus on the larger down facing fern.
C&C greatly appreciated here.
(EDIT: I've posted the original below since it's the preferred for most people....and I've jumped on the bandwagon as well)
Canon 20d
24-105 L IS at 24mm
ISO 100 - f/4 - 1/50 sec - -2/3 EV
Circular Polarizer
I think I really like the original image other than the crop, simply because of the darker areas bordering on each side - balancing it for me. I must say the exposure is excellent - the colors look very accurate and natural... I agree that the Gorge is a photographer's playground right now...
yep those are ferns....the color is nice but the comp is not working for me

I'm not sure why you cropped this, the original is fantastic. I love the color and comp. Beautiful work.

Ok, here's the original. It's funny how I was so focused on the crop at first. I actually do prefer this one, especially after working on a print.
Thanks for the comments so far.
(on a side note....it's strange to me that I was able to maintain a higher jpeg quality with this full crop in Photoshop as I exported to the web. Level 7 here vs. level 4 for the other. I'm not sure what yet)
