I'll be in Portland (from Ashland) for a week or so with a few days of free time to explore. I've seen the standard Gorge stuff by the road, and would like to get 1-3 miles off into some "gorgeous" spots - you know, perfect lush green scenery with a magical waterfall & pool, a seven-point buck looking up from grazing by the pool, etc.

I'd appreciate your recommendations for favorites & locations (with or without bucks), and especially links to photos of them.

I'll try to spend some time looking around this site (I'm new here) and will probably get some good ideas that way, too.

Many Thanks!

Dane, a good day hike to get in some Gorge shooting would be the Eagle Creek trail. It covers multiple falls, streams, and lush forest. A quick web search will reveal tons of reviews and directions to the trailhead. It is a fee parking lot and it fills quickly on weekends so either go on a weekday or get there early.

I'd also point you to Bryan Swan's www.waterfallsnorthwest.com. Its an excellent comprehensive site that can give you some potential locations as well.

Dane, for the mileage you're thinking of, I'd try the Horsetail/Oneonta loop, with the spur to Triple Falls. The upper Multnomah and Wahkeena areas were flattened by a violent hail storm last weekend, so won't be photogenic for awhile. I'm not sure of the condition of Oneonta canyon, but Eagle Creek was spared by the storm, so I'm thinking that it was a cloudburst over the west end, and missed Oneonta and east.

The loop and spur to Triple Falls is about 5 miles, total, I think. Safest parking is at Horsetail Falls.

Thanks, Bryan and Tom for your suggestions. I think I've been on the Oneonta loop, so will probably check out the Eagle Creek trail.

The Dog Mt trail sounds interesting, too. How far up is it to the viewpoints on the east trail? I'd probably save the hike to the top for a clear day
