Looks like I will have a chance at a couple of mornings at Joshua Tree NP and am wondering if any of you can give me AM recommendations for the territory?

Thanks.

Rich...Joshua tree NP's a great place to shoot...I've only shot there in the evenings, but the terrain lends itself to sunrise shoots as well by my reckoning...no high mountains in the immediate vicinity to block sunrise shots of the same lcoations as I have here: www.pbase.com/kartik78/california

cheers,

Lot's of interesting rock formations right around Jumbo Rocks CG. You could also go to Hidden Valley CG for more larger formations. There's something called the totem pole down by the real hidden valley which looks pretty cool. Check out the palm oases down towards the Cottonwood springs area, bit of a hike in (few miles in?). Lots of Joshua trees everywhere in queen valley. Rattlesnake canyon (accessible from Indian Cove) is pretty cool. Don't exclude Barker dam. If there's still water in there, it's very pretty in morning and evening light. Check out the geology tour road, that's pretty interesting and has some cool stuff. Don't feed the coyotes!

I was just there a few weeks ago and liked it a lot.

The area around Jumbo Rocks is cool, but not sure about sunrise light there.

Definitely check out the Cholla Cactus Garden and the Ocotillo Patch.

Also, outside the park, a few miles north of Tewntynine Palms (near the military base) there are sand dunes... supposedly with very few footprints. I didn't have the chance to go there but it sounded very photogenic.

Thanks so much for the great advice. You have taken me from knowing nothing to having some great starting points. Since this is a business trip that is having a sideline for a significant decade birthday milemarker for a dear freind of mine that is the priority but I am certain i will get at least two 1/2 days to hit it good.

Cant wait to take some shots now!!

Richie, if you're just in the area, check out Idyllwild and the San Jacinto mountains, especially where Tahquitz and Suicide rocks are. Very pretty up in those mountains (I think, though I've never photographed there)
