O.K. Glenn, I admit that I'm not the flower GURU. But, I think you have found an alien being who is trying to steal the combined intelligence of Arkansas !!!!!!
Great capture of whatever it is. I like the dof on the center portion of the flower.

Looks like horsemint to me - one of my favorites!

Thanks for the comments & info. I saw the horsemint in Don's book but it somehow didn't look quite the same. Flowers do change as they mature. I should have remembered that.
You have a nice composition of lemon mint, Monarda citriodora. Did you happen to smell the fragrant flowers? Citrus. I didn't put it in my Ozark or Illinois wildflower books because it is not as common as the other monardas in those regions plus those profit-driven, pesky publishers [sorry Tim :-) ] will only allow so many pictures in a wildflower book. More pictures means more pages means a more expensive book means less people will buy it. A study by Falcon Press determined that when a book goes over $25, sales drop dramatically.
I would love to author a 1000-species wildflower book but that just ain't gonna happen.
Best,
Don

Man, that's an interesting specimen Glenn. Glad you found it and glad to know what it is thanks to Don.

Thanks Don,
I appreciate your help. There were lots of these along Ellis Creek near Devils Den. I also found some other species I'd never seen before. I'll be posting them soon.
