I'd like to visit Wet Mountains next weekend and car camp somewhere high with good views towards the Sangres. I would appreciate it if someone can help me with the following:
1. What is the best access from the west (we are coming from La Veta pass/Malachite)? It looks like county road 634 goes up there from Gardner, but there is also CR 630, and CR 636 (pretty good shortcut).
2. Can a Subary Forester make it on those roads?
3. How far from Greenhorn mountain is the road closed?
Momo, I'm not sure about those roads, since I don't recall the numbers of roads I've traveled on in that area, but I've been over the Wet Mountains on the Ophir Creek road and it has some nice views of the Sangres with what looked to be decent car camping spots. Topo! lists it as Gardner Road on the west side of the Wet Mtns., with the number 634. (Hmm, re-reading your questions, I guess that's one of them you wondered about!) Do you know how to get from La Veta Pass to Gardner on those backroads? It's ton's shorter than going all the way to Walsenburg and then cutting north into the Wet Mountain Valley. The turn-off is about a mile west of the pass on the north side of the road.
I'd still wonder about snow, or at least mud, on some of those roads, but my guess is you'll be fine by now.
Momo, if you saw my Wets post a week or so ago, i took 634 to 630, but the road was closed well before Greenhorn, not sure why. It was in fine condition, just very washboard.
there are no views of the Sangres from there, youd have to hike a bit.
Well, in case anyone cares, the Forest Service people told me that the roads to the Greenhorn Mtn trailhead are open from both sides of Wet Mountains. We'll be there this weekend.

Yeah, we always take the shortcut from La Veta to Gardner. We'll just try the CR 634 and see how it goes. Thank you.

I think I will call the Forest Service to find out the details.
