My wife and I are planning a trip to New England this fall.
If someone could give me some "must sees" and dates you would suggest. Also some central lodging places that have nice atmosphere.
Any help would be appreciated!!

Rich, NE is a very large area. You can get good color from NY through ME and every state in between as well as NE Canada. Since the timing is hard to predict, I would suggest that you go somewhere with plenty to see with or without fall color. I don't know how much time you have but Bar Harbor, ME area has Acadia National Park which is beautiful any time of the year, northern NH has plenty of State and National Parks to keep you busy with or without the foliage, and the coastline states have many activities as well. As to timing, usually the last week in September or the first week in October have the best color. If you plan to go to any well traveled spots, you should get reservations quickly.

Once you decide on a general area, then I'm sure someone will jump in with local motels and local "must see" spots.

Baxter State Park is nice in October in upper ME. You may run into some moose and the color will be super. You can choose to do some short hikes or longer ones. There is a nice rustic place to stay right nearby in the Big Moose Inn.

The nice thing about New England is that you really can't go wrong as long as you are chasing peak color. Some areas I would investigate...

The farms of Northern Vermont and the NE Kingdom in early October
The Central White Mountains and the kancamagus highway from conway to lincoln mid October
Baxter is good in late September
Acadia is good in Late October
The Monadnock Region is Mid to late October

That should cover you...

Richard, drop me a line if you are visiting Quebec. I can suggest quite a few interesting and contrasting opportunities here.
