I visited Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR this morning and was surprised to see two new calves were born over the last two days - one was last night! The herd is now up to 24 from the original 16.
RMA will open to the public again this Saturday, the 14th. The refuge will stay open for good now and we can expect major changes over the next few years.
The attached image is a nursing calf ~ 2 days old with a backdrop of the Flatirons and Indian Peaks. I chose not to crop the image to keep the expansive feel.
Geez, dude, you weren't kidding! This is a powerful image. Wouldn't be quite as good if there were only blue sky background. And look at all that photo real estate for text!
There's no question where your eyes go in this shot. Very nice.
Even better, howvever, is how well the bison are doing - and what's happening with the RM Arsenal. I appecreciate your letting us know what's going on. Something positive is awlays a nice change.

Nice one again Dave. I agree with Jesse and Mel. I am wondering, did you take any versions with slightly more background definition (if that was even possible)? The background kicks ass as is, but I wonder what it would look like if the mountains were a little more discernible.

Thanks folks ~ Jack: I was using a 600mm @ F4 and didn't feel like I could gain much DOF with a smaller aperture. The animals were moving too, so there was little time for experimentation before they disappeared behind the ridge. I would put the photo in the "pretty good" category, wishing for a raised head on the cow and more detail in the BG - always room for improvement!
By the way, seeing these little guys nurse will make you wince. They're rough!

As for the text that Todd mentioned, how about "Got Milk"?
Very nice!
