I am trying to find a backpack that I can carry my D3 with a 200-400 VR f/4 attached. I am looking at the Lowe Pro Vertex 200 and 300. I am leaning towards the 300 but I am afraid it might be too big for carrying on a plane, while I am not sure the 200 is big enough for this combo. I am hoping someone might have experience with this. I would also appreciate any other bag recommendations. Thanks in advance...Nate

I just took my Vertex 300 with the D300 and 200-400mm lens on a trip to Canada. Worked great and I had no problems fitting it in the overheads or under the seat. You can also fit the camera and 200-400mm assembled into the pack... but it's usually a good idea to disassemble the lens/camera when flying. Plenty of other gear also fit into the pack including the 70-200mm, 17-35mm, and laptop, chargers, batteries, etc... Keep in mind that the weight restriction for carryons is usually pretty low, but you are allowed two carryons. I also bring one smaller bag if the weight is too much.

Hi Nathan,

I use the MP-1 (for the 600mm) & the MP-3 (for the 200-400mm) both will fit into an over head locker (from the Moose Peterson stable!).

Tamrac Expedition 7 takes my D300 with grip, fitted to the 200-400mm and its been flyabout a couple of times without problems. The bag is well made and has room for plenty of other kit too.
