Hi all- I joined the forum last month, but haven't yet taken the time to introduce myself. My name is Tim Feeney and I live in Hugo, MN. Few people knew much about Hugo until a couple weeks ago, when a tornado swept through here, and demolished a bunch of homes only a quarter mile from my house! My house looks like the victim of a drive-by shooting because of all the hail damage, but it could've been much worse. That close call has certainly made me more interested in backing up my photos, and making sure that I have copies of them in more than one location, such as my parent's house in St. Paul. It's also made me a little more conscious and thankful for every "normal" day. Things have been pretty crazy with the weather in general, and these fast moving, hail-heavy storms have got me wondering if Art Bell is right about the "Coming Global Superstorm". Whatever happens, I'm sure I'll be out there photographing the thunderheads while everyone else is huddled together in their basements. That's just the kind of crazy I can be. Anyway, I'm only a couple years into taking photography seriously, i.e., trying to turn it into a full-time business. My favorite areas are landscapes, wildlife, and macro photography. I think my most interesting work to date is my macro shots of Lake Superior Agates. I'd like to do a coffee table book of my agate shots at some point, but publishing costs are a bit daunting.
Right now I'm pursuing the art fair/gallery route, so we'll see where that takes me. BTW- I'm trying to figure out a way to get a road trip/photo excursion happening for sometime later this summer/fall. I was going to head out on 94W, and hit the major parks (Theodore Roosevelt, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Glacier, etc.), but these gas prices are kicking my ass. If there's anyone from my general area who has a flexible schedule and would like to join me on such an expedition, let me know. If we had 3 or 4 people splitting gas costs, and cut all other expenses by camping and bringing prepared meals, we could put together a killer trip for relatively cheap. Another option is going the Amtrak route, because I think their off-peak season rates are less than $500 for a 15 day rail pass.
Tim, good to hear you survived the storm. I think photographing the weather and its impact on the environment (both natural and man made) would be great to pursue.
Good luck with all of your photographic ventures, and thanks for joining us!
