I just took a little family trip up to GGC today not expecting much. This was a non photography young kids hiking type trip. But I always am scouting for new potenitally good photo locations.

Well at the end of our little hike at lower elevations (Horseshoe trail) I talked the group into driving up to Panorama Point to check things out before taking off. Wow what a view from there!!!

We all soon realized that that was where we should have spent our entire visit. The aspens are pretty abundant up there and very nice and green right now. There were even some wildflowers in various places. Although I didn't have much time to gather more info here are some shots from the lookout:

Many thirteeners and a few fourteeners are visible from the lookout. So I can only imagine how nice this spot would be during fall colors and sunrise, etc...  And there is a campground right up there as well.

Those links aren't working for me ?? However, I can get to your smugmug home page.

Links aren't working for me either, but welcome to my little corner of Colorado. Panorama Point is indeed a great bit of real estate, with views from Mt. Evans up to Longs Peak and pretty much everything in between (except, ironically, the only two major peaks in Gilpin County - James and Parry Peaks).

Did you get to Fraser Meadow off of Horseshoe Trail, or did you stop before then? If you made it, how are the Iris up there? Was thinking of an early morning hike tomorrow or Tuesday...

Sorry guys! Thanks for letting me know about the links. I had them in my family area which is normally hidden w/out a password. You should be able to see them now. I placed copies in another area.

Les, thanks for the welcome! What an awseome little or 'Big' slice of paradise depending on where one is looking from. Our kiddos and sister-in-laws were all under six. So we only went as far as Greenfield Meadow. But we did see 'some' irises there. They were in patches and not profuse by any means. But still nice to see amoung the 'green' aspens. Here is one quick snap just to give you an idea:

I can only imagine that with a little more rain and the right location more flowers could easily be found.

Those are some nice puffy clouds you've got there! Love 'em!

Looks like I'm going to have to schedule a morning walk Real Soon Now or miss the best Iris for yet another year!

If you go I would love to see some shots from up there. Is that meadow one of the better one's for iris in the park? I know Michael Deleon has shot nice columbines from up higher in the park before. But I haven't seen much else posted on the forums here.

There were profuse amounts on the yellow cone shaped flowers (sorry, I'm not too good with names) at the higher elevations nearer Panoramic Point today. So again for someone who knows where to look I'm sure there are more where those came from.

Last year when I was up there, Fraser had a great Iris selection, but I was never up there in good light early enough in the season. The background scenery is as much a reason to visit as the irises themselves. I've tried to clean up a rather fuzzy sample...

My best-selling piece is a Columbine shot from GGCSP. I've posted a number of images from the park, but haven't labeled most of them by location. Most of my Colorado Fall shots last year were from there... I'll be putting up galleries for various state parks in the near future; if you're interested, just watch for the announcement.

Panorama Point is indeed a great view. I really like your wide angle treatment with these shots Derek. Gives a lot of room for the view, the green aspen and those nice clouds.

Nice, Derek, i especially like the first shot, i agree with Josh that the expansive view makes the shot.
BTW, finally made it to S Colony (see new post) i would wait at least a few weeks unless you really like stomping through lots of snow
