Aperture export

When I export pictures to NP from Aperture they get "flat". I use proofing with SRGB before I export and the picture is how I like it to look, but when I view the picture on NP it is "flat" or lacking detail. I do not use black point compensation or gamma adjustments in the export preferences. Quality is set to 11. Can anyone help.

Trym -

Are you posting directly to NPN or do you post a link to your photo that you've hosted elsewhere?

If you post directly, you are up against the 200KB limit, which, depending on the photo, can mean significant JPEG compression and loss of fine detail. If you host elsewhere, and then link, you can have larger files and less compression, but your viewers may be put off by slow load times.

There are several version of sRGB but the variations shouldn't cause the problem you are reporting.

Thanks Jim. I post directly so I am up against the 200 kb limit. It is most likely the explanation

Trym - I know nothing about Aperture, but I have a couple of questions :

1) You say you're saving at quality 11. 11 out of what? Is that 11 out of 12 like in PS? If so, then you really shouldn't be noticeably losing detail just from saving as JPG.
2) Do you pick a rendering intent when converting to sRGB?
3) If so, and it's relative colorimetric, why don't you use black point compensation?
4) Are you sure the file output is being tagged with sRGB? If you're using Safari, and it's untagged, (I think) it will try to use the monitor profile, which could make for unusual results.

Hi David

1. Yes it is 11 out of 12
2. No I have found no such option
3. I been toggling it off and on, but have little or no impact on the problem
4. It is the same result viewing in Safari and Explorer so I believe it is tagged

I also use Pantone calibiration every second week to create a new color profile. The other export options I use is "fit within pixels" , size 750X450 and 75 DPI.

Is the export option what is doing the re-size? Or do you resize within the tool, re-sharpen, and the export (if that's possible)?

Any type of resize is going to blur detail and cause fuzziness....if you don't have good control over it, that couldbe your problem.

Thanks David
The resizing is done in the export presets. I got a number predefined presets like JPEG/TIFF 50 % of original or JPEG/TIFF fit within 640X640. I did try a preset for "export to Email" and used the pixel size adjustment to get a 200 kb size export. With that particular preset I got a result which was pleasing. So I guess the problem is related to resizing or/and the preset macros. I will dig deeper into how those presets are programmed. My conclusion so far is that this a "bug" or flaw in Aperture. I read blogs that other people are experienced the same problem, but so far I have not found a satisfying explanation.
Anyhow thanks for patience and help

Cool - glad to see it resolved (sort of - bugs are so annoying).

Make sure the export preset you are using is set to use sRGB and not Adobe RGB. You can create your own presets to set the max pixel size, or %age scale, and to set the color space used - it's simple enough to create a new one especially for NPN. I don't have Aperture in front of me right now - but look around for a little '+' somewhere around thehe bottom of the export preset list, and that should allow you to set up your own preset.

Probably the reason that the e-mail export looks better to you is that it is already set to use sRGB. The on-screen proofing is simply that - on-screen - and has no effect on the ouput/export.
