When you buy a new screen, it will come with a special tool and instructions. The tool will help you remove the old screen and lock in the new one with little risk to scratching the mirror.
Thanks for the reply, Guy. Because Pentax has discontinued the P645 line I had to buy the screen used. It came in the original case and with the tool, but with no instructions. The seller doesn't have the instructions either, and so far Pentax has been non-responsive.
While I "think" I see how to remove and insert the new screen, I'm hesitant to do so due to the risk you mentioned above.
Rich, it's been a few years since I had to do this so take it with a grain of salt. There should be a small latch behind the lens bayonet. Once you push it in, it will release the screen, which will slide out.
You then clip in the new screen using the tool and position it in place, and push the latch back in.
Without the tool this would be harder to do but the tool holds the screen firmly so you can avoid contact with the mirror. It's really a simple procedure.
