Flight photography
I have just spent a few days in La Brenne. I could not really get close to Purple Heron but was lucky enought to catch a few flying past. I always find it difficult to take a decent shot. I use a 40d and used to use the 100-400mmISL but recently have just started using the 400mmf5.6.
This is one of the shots I took

Very nice looking bird Kim and nicely caught. You have managed to make the bird seem quite elegant which is often not the case with herons. For my own taste I would like to see a bit more space in front of the heron but still fine as is.

Thank you Robert for the comment and suggestion about space. Yes I agree about the space, but I only just managed to catch it as it was disappearing right - loads of sky the the left!! Not quite what I wanted!

Hi Kim
Glad to see you've joined and posted . I,m sure you will enjoy it. I think I agree with Robert,- a bit more space (especially in frontof the bird)would be good.
Cheers
John

Very nice - Welcome to the group. I wonder if this has a magenta cast, although I've just had a new video card installed which makes me wonder if the problem is at my end?

Nicely done Kim,

Always good to get a view of both wings, in a side-on flight shot IMO

Would be easy to add a touch of canvas on the RHS, and stretch it slightly in this shot, if you wanted to.

Nice one

Alan

Hello Kim and welcome. This is a very good flight shot and better than a recent one I took of the same species. Very easy to add some canvas on the RHS if you so wished. It looks a little over sharpened to me as I can see a slight halo under the bird, a minor nit though.

Look forward to seeing more of your work :toast:

Thanks again, I will make note of the sharpening I sharpened it through mode, chanels etc and it was fine, then probably stupidly sharpened edges afterwards!! Should have leeft that out. Adding canvas - oh dear - that has left me scratching my head!!

Hi Kim,

A nice first post... looks like you are using a rather complicated sharpening routine that may not be needed these days.....

To add canvas in this case simply go to canvas size add a little to the right, then draw a rectangular selection over the sky on the right, making sure it goes from top to bottom, hit ctrl t and drag it over the new bit of canvas, double click to commit and voila its done.
