I'm going to be passing through Homer (on the way back from Hallo Bay in Katmai) in early July and decided to extend my stay for a few days. I've rented a cabin and some kayaks and was planning to poke around Sadie Cove and Tutka Bay.
I just noticed Alaska had a regional forum (hurray!) so I thought I'd check here for ideas. Is anyone here familiar with the area?
I'm hoping to get some decent otter shots, but I'm really not sure what else to expect.
If you like birds and avian photography, invest the bucks for a ride out to Gull Rock. Great birds, relatively calm water, terrific backgrounds. It's especially good for Alcids.
Kachemak Bay is a great place for macro photography and is considered one of the best spots in south-central Alaska to photograph tidepool creatures, when the tide is low of course.

Thanks, Jim & Carl.
I'll be sure to bring my tubes, but I think I'm stuck without my macro lens. (I don't think I'll be able to fit any more glass on the plane to Katmai... I'm limited to 250# including me.... had to makes some tough choices.)
I see a Gull Island on my chart off China Poot Bay. Is that it?
Dave,
Well, I have always been across the bay when the tide was low. Honestly, I have never really explored the Homer side of the bay. You might ask around in Homer because I have heard that there are some good spots on the Homer side, I just don't know where they are.

Yep. Draw a line straight out from Homer Spit and there you are.
Are there any spots you might recommend for tide pooling? Do you need to go across to Kachemak Bay State Park, or Seldovia?
