An online friend of mine is going to be visiting Redvale over the 4th (he is also on NPN), and I am going to meet him down there and do some shooting. While I know the desert area fairly well, I am not so familiar with the San Juans. As sunrise might be difficult with the scheduling, I am hoping for some advice on some good sunset vistas.
Looking at the map, something off of 145 or 550 would be best, as getting over to 149 might be a bit far, but things are still pretty open, so who knows...
I don't know yet how much hiking we can do, so anything under a mile would be good, but any suggestion is appreciated. I do have a Pathfinder, so 4WD is alright. I would really appreciate some suggestions!
Thanks!

Yankee Boy Basin or Engineer Pass would be good. Here's a shot from Engineer looking north to Coxcomb, Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre at sunset from last week. Not a great shot, but it shows the potential of the area.

David, You can't go wrong with the Dallas Divide. No hiking involved and just a few miles west of Ridgway.
Engineer Mountain from the Old Lime Creek Road and the Spud Lake trail between Durango and Silverton is a good bet.
You can sneak a peek from one of Guy Schmickle's images.
Grayrock and Grizzly Peaks and Spud Mounatin are also visible from the area. For more info. on this easy (and excellent!) trail, see this Forest Service link.
Any of the four lakes / ponds along Molas Pass on Hwy. 550 south of Silverton are good for sunset. You can drive right up to all of them.

Thanks for all the advice! I will have a day to explore before my friend arrives, so I will be checking all of these areas out. Yankee Boy is one I have been wanting to do, but it will be a bit early for wildflowers. Of course, I'm sure it is beautiful anyway! I'll be using the Colorado altas this weekend to plot out a course.
