Kingfisher preening
Seeing Jeroen Stel's image of a kingfisher preening reminded me of a similar image I took some time ago. The remarks about leaving space around the bird and the resultant increase in depth of field struck a chord. However, it is often the case that the image formed at the time is the result of the equipment we happen to use at that specific moment in time. I was using a 500mm lens and it just happened that the distance to the branch the bird chose to perch on was just right for the image. Had it landed on another branch (this was not a set up perch) it may have been a different story.

Well detailed behavioural shot the branch in the top left is a bit distracting though.

I love this picture. The bird appears totally unaware of your existence. The branch in the background in my opinion confirms that this is not a set up shot and to me that adds to the value of the picture ie more wild and more special. I know there's a divergence of opinion in this area!

Quite like this shot - the branch in the BG isn't prominent enough to be distracting I feel.

Lovely shot Robert.
One tiny nit is that tha bird would be better a bit higher in the frame, but as you say it doesn't always happen like that. The bird certainly does look relaxed too.

A fine shot. I don't mind the folliage/branch in the upper corner. :toast:

Lovely shot Robert :toast:

Agree with your comments, regarding these situations, and i guess the zoom v prime conunderum often applies also.

Another lovely intimate kingfisher shot. This guy looks quite dark blue with a bright stripe
