Thanks Matt Cole, writepic, PhilH and Mark Fellowes for your advice on ring flash technique. Here is another image taken yesterday. No idea what species of fly it is.

Hello David lovely colouful image you have and it all looks hunky dory. The only thing for me is that the flower seems to cancel out the fly and vice versa. Hope you can see what I mean.
very nice shot of the fly sharp and well exposed but have to agree with Major that the flower is competing for attention

I'm trying to work out what you've done with the ring flash here David - all the light is coming from the right side of the frame.
The subject is sharp and highly detail, but as others have said, the perch is a bit of a killer really - for me it's too "heavy" and bright and dominates the actual subject.
Still a razor sharp subject though but I've no idea about id
agree with andy, it looks like a torch is shining up its rear!! nice sharp image though

Nice image but yes, perhaps a bit bright on the right hand side

Its a nice sharp image, but there looks to be a shadow in the lower centre of the shot leaving the head in the dark. Could there have been a leaf or something in front of part of the flash unit perhaps? Eric
