Well,

It has been officially announced in a German photo magazine. This has been discussed for several weeks now as various leaks about the new Nikon FF emerged. It is a direct competitor to the Canon 5D as an entry level FF DSLR. Here is a link to one of the discussions:

Combined with the new class leading Nikon 14-24/2.8 & 24-70/2.8 this is looking to be a great new system for landscape photographers. For us Canon users waiting for the 5DII this is a tempting offering to say the least. Competition is good thing no matter what system one uses. Hopefully Canon will have an answer to Nikon at a decent price as well.

With the new Sony FF coming out soon it looks like Nikon decided to lead frog ahead with their FF offering. Supposedly we weren't going to see any of these new bodies until this Fall at Photokina. Maybe July will have other surprises in store.

Sort of looks like a heavy and expensive Nikon version of the 5D?

Yes, it will be interesting to see how much its initial cost will be in us dollars. I have a feeling it will be close in price to the new 5D II which should be released soon. But maybe Canon will bring in their new SLR in under the Nikon price. As far as the weight I don't really mind it as long as it is lighter than the D3 or 1D series.

Hmmmm....I'm trying to suss out the 'advantages' for landscape photographers that this new (and welcome) camera possesses.
I rarely shoot above ISO 200 and use a tripod most of the time, so higher ISO quality, multiple AF points and a faster fps rate don't really carry much appeal.

Lots of advantages for action photographers, but I see little that offers advantages to landscape photographers over a 5D/40D.

Definitely not enough to warrant a system change.

Yeah,

I don't really care about those things either. But I don't think those are the main draw to Nikon for landscapers. It is their class leading wide angle-mid range lenses that go with the body - in other words the entire system.

However even though I like the new Nikon's 14-24 performance over *any* other lens in its class (prime or zoom), I don't really know that it would be worth a system change either. If Canon could make a WA lens closer in terms of sharpness across the frame I probably wouldn't consider it. And although the 17-40L or new 16-35L II aren't necessarily the best performing WA lenses I may decide they are 'good enough' for my purposes.

Yet I am waiting to see what Sony comes up with at the wide end. A new Zeiss 16-35 is supposed to come out soon. Their new Zeiss lenses are top quality. The Zeiss 24-70/2.8 even rated a bit higher than the new Nikon 24-70/2.8 which are both supposed to produce prime quality images.

I guess I have been considering a system change for a while as I have been saving for the 5DII.

It's a scary thing when "entry level" and "$2600" can be used on the same item.

Yes, especially when the 40D can be had for well under $1000 with Canon rebates. It makes me wonder when FF prices will come down to more realistic levels. But the competition is great and will help to push the manufacturers to 'eventually' lower FF prices IMO.
