Still LOTS of snow in the Elks!
I got lazy this morning and just did some tele shots at sunrise looking towards the Elk Mountains from Cottonwood Pass. It's amazing how much snow is still up there. This pano is a crop from a single frame, not a stitch, but it's mostly just for current conditions reference anyway. You can view a much larger version here.

After hiking up to Hartenstein LAKE in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness yesterday afternoon, I tried hoofing it back down in time to catch any potential sunset ops on Cottonwood Pass. Oh, to have arrived 15 minutes earlier than I did! It was pretty monumental, but I crested the pass just as the sun was setting behind the Elks. It was still lighting up the clouds something fierce, and to top that off, there were areas of cloud-to-cloud lightning punctuating things. I didn't catch any of the latter, but I did get some of the cloud color, like this over Ice Mountain. The sRGB conversion kinda took the punch out of the intensity of the colors, but you can get an idea of what it was like here.

Geeezzz, Todd! Look at all that white stuff. I'll be in the San Juans in 20 days. Any updates on how the passes are doing for snow melt?

Wow Todd, the large version of the pano is spectacular! I love Capitol and Cathedral peaks. It makes me want to go to Cottonwood pass this weekend. Thanks very much for posting these.

That second shot is insane! Awesome colors.

I like both shots. Lots of snow indeed.

I'm heading out next week and the following week to the San Juans...ought to be interesting. I have been monitoring Switzerland of America's trail report and here's a link if anyone is interested for the trails around Ouray.

Love the colors in both, but the second one is really appealing to a colors guy like me!
