I have read several articles where they say that an incorrectly set Diopter setting will not afect the focus of and image.
Here is my posistion I wear glasses and have since my late 40's I am 56years old now. I have been using manual focus of late with my camera to try and get correct focus on subjects.
Over the past few days 100% of images that I have taken have been very soft.
here is my basic setup
canon 10D
Sigma 70-300mm DG Macro lens
2 x Platinum optics extender
I have tried to reset the Diopter and even used the lens without the 2X and on auto focus still soft images.
I have been altering the ISO and the exposure bias inorder to get a faster shutter speed.
I would like to get to how it was last week
Regards Peter
Peter,
My guess is that the extender and long focal length are responsible for the softness, rather than the diopter. The diopter will allow your eye to focus on the screen. If you're using AF, it shouldn't have any effect.
I'm not familiar with "Platinum" but in general most mid-low end extenders will degrade the image significantly.
Are you using a sturdy tripod?

When I use the 2X extender I have to manual focus no choice on that I can't afford a 2.8f long reach glass (which will alow me to use the AF) at the moment way out of my pockets ability.

Well Peter, if you're willing to put in some time, you could set up the camera with 2X on a sturdy tripod and point it at something with fine detail like new crisp money. Then manually focus it as sharp as you can at every diopter setting. Then look through the pictures and see which one was actually the sharpest. That should be your diopter setting then. It will also show you what are the sharpest results you can expect with that 2X.
