Lake Charles
Fools Peak (on the right) dominates the scene at Lake Charles in the Holy Cross Wilderness. That's Eagle Peak in the center.

This shot is from an overnight trip on June 28 and 29. We planned to go all the way up to Mystic Island Lake but after post holing through the snow banks for a half mile or so we decided to stop at Lake Charles.

The flowers were starting to pop up but still sparse. That's why I cropped this up from the bottom.

Tachihara 4x5, 80mm, Velvia 50, 3 stop soft GND.

About that grad line: It's not a grad line, it's a cloud shadow. I placed the filter at an angle along the tree line. It's also visible in the reflection. Never the less, it bothers me. I think it mars a fine photo. I'd be grateful for any tips on how to tame that beast without destroying the rest of the image.

Cheers,

Nice scene! The cloud shadow doesn't bother me at all...I think it adds to it if anything. I would, however, like to see more of the bottom of the image. It feels like it's cropped unnaturally high.

Mark, my thoughts are identical to Grant's - I like the cloud shadow on the mountain, but would like to see more room at the bottom. Beautiful scene with a nice, crisp feel to it.

Really nice! The reflections are great and clouds add a lot to the photo. It does seem a bit out of balance and more foreground could help, but I don't think this is a very big deal. Great photo by my eye.

That's the story of the summer so far!

Fantastic Mark. Didn't know you were shooting 4X5. This is a beauty! That cloud shadow is great. I don't think it takes anything from the photo.

Beautiful photo, Mark! I'll bet the shadow is actually an asset in the full-size version of this picture. There is something white in upper right corner that keeps drawing my eye, though.

I certainly dig it. I didn't think the shadow was a grad line until you mentioned your concern. It looks pretty natural to me. But I love the image!

Awesome shot, Mark. The cloud shadows throughout the scene are a nice addition... I love it when that happens on the peaks! The ice in the lake is cool too.

I agree, the shadow really helps the photo, it looks very natural, also more foreground would help balance out the sky expanse.

Killer image! It's unanimous, everyone loves the shadow.

Stunning image, Mark. Didn’t know there was a grad until you mentioned it. I agree the shadow adds a lot to the photograph, and if it were my photo, I would not retouch.

Looks like you have a bit of light fall-off around the edges – you might consider brightening these just a bit.

Stellar image! I tried to get up to Mystic Island Lake several years ago (funny how just the name of a place can inspire a trip) but the rain turned my then-girlfriend and me back. This is a fantastic image in every way.

Great image. Really like the clouds and the light.
