Great Grey Owl
Recently spent some time in Finland and thought I had a few half-decent bear shots until I saw Edwin and Danny's!! Back next year to try again then!

Meantime, here's the first great grey owl out of the processing pile. This was my first mission for Wild Wonders of Europe and there are a few more shots on the WW blog. Taken with a remote and a short telephoto lens.

Canon 1dsMII, 70-200, ISO 640

I really love these Finnish GG owl images.

Bird's fab and the lichen covered trees etc. always look so good.

Very nice.

Great shot Pete

Like the midges around the owl and caught perfectly with wings at full spread!

Cheers

Hello Pete

Wow what a fantastic image you must have had some fun with her. When we were there the mozzy's were bad so you must be covered in bumps  Great shot.

Hi Peter,

I bet you have some really nice bear shots taken home with you
This one is great for sure. Must be heaven to shoot these owls in such great environment.
Wonderful action and I really hope to do the same some day. One thing is for sure....Finland is the place to be.

Great work.

Lovely shot, great environment, beautiful bird, and a great pose - can`t ask for more. Superb!
BTW, just watched your "Go Wild With Your Camera" DVD yesterday. Really interesting and informative; thanks!

Hi guys

Just to respond to a few questions.
1. Owl is baited with dead voles.
2. Yes, mosquitoes in the forest are a nightmare!
3. Finland has a wealth of subject matter but don't be tempted to try and find it yourself - you need local assistance.
4. Edwin, I actually punched 'your' bear cub on the nose as it tried to climb in the hide on two occasions!

Thx
Pete

Fab pose, just wonder if the tree trunk top right side is worth excluding?
