Hello all,

I have a question about photographing Puffins. this Friday I am leaving for a 8 day trip to scotland. One of my destinations while there will be the Isle of Skye. Of course while im there I will book a tour to go and see the Puffins.

Now since I've seen a lot of great puffins pictures come by in this forum I'd thought this would be THE place to ask for some tips and advice!(if this is the wrong forum please tell me where the right place wold be)

I've read some stories about photographing Puffins, but the more info the better ofcourse:wink: Oh my main lenses for shooting puffins will be a 200mm G f2,8 and a 70-300G SSM, both mounted on an Sony A700.

Since I will only have 1 shot(trip) I'd love to get some pointers and tips, any usefull info that could be benificial for this trip really. Also don't hesitate to share any info on photographing Skye on skye

thank you all in advance! :toast:

Hi Jorne
I went to Skye in may and the only place I found Puffins was at Neist Point right up in the north west of the island. Its a long hard walk from the car park but well worth it, if you pass the lighthouse and climb down on the rocks and if the tides right they come in quite close. I was there for two days and got images of Puffins and Razorbills.

Hope this helps

Thanks Colin! I'll mark the spot on my map. You did not try a tour (from elgol)? Im curious about experiences on those as well!

Jorne

I did a boat trip from Elgol a few weeks ago, but no puffins I'm afraid. If you have time, you might consider taking a ferry from Uig to North Uist and walk around the nature reserve at Balranald. I had a great time there, although still no puffins. You could walk to Talisker bay - we saw plenty wheatear and meadow pipit. Hope you enjoy it!

On the west coast, you can try Handa - a short boat crossing from Tarbet (just north of Scourie approx 50 miles north of Ullapool). Handa is managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Some info here. You could also try the Treshnish Isles, reached by a boat trip from the Ulva Ferry on Mull - try Turus Mara.

On the East coast you can get a day trip out to see Puffins on the Isle of May from Anstruther (May Princess), or you can venture a bit further down the coast to Northumberland and visit the Farne Islands - again on a day trip via boat (Billy Shiels runs the day trips from Seahouses - see Farne-Islands. there's also a possibility of seeing puffins at the RSPB reserve at Fowlsheugh.

Have a good trip and be sure to share a few of your photos with us :wavey:
