At times I ask a photographer a question. The photographer answers, most often directing his reply to me. I think it is courteous to acknowledge his answer. But I am in doubt if I should do this in the Galleries or send the photographer an e-mail. Which is preferable? How do you respond to an anwer?
I'd say that if the question is interesting for the others on the same forum, then asking it there is the best thing to do. And if so, why not acknowledge the answer there too. It might lead to even more interesting information rising to the surface. Even if not, I don't see why an acknowledgement would irritate others either.
When I ask questions and get a response, usually I leave it at that. If it's a longer, quite detailed answer I may respond with an email thanking them, but otherwise not. Not trying to be ugly, just short and efficient.
From the other side of the coin, when I am asked a question and give an answer, I never expect a response, nor do I get upset if I don't get one. Most of the time, questions are quick and short, my answers are the same, and it's over and done with quickly and easily for all concerned. Certainly an email of thanks is not irritating, but neither is it necessary. Just my 2 cents of course...
Will, I always put the answer in the original thread. The forums are meant to be educational. If a question is asked about the image it should be answered there instead of via e-mail, because it's not just a conversation between two people when it happens in the open forums -- it's an educational opportunity for all who are looking in. That's IMO.
I don't know how many photogs actually go back to the image to see if there was a response to their answer, but I agree with you, Will....I also favor the gallery option.
