Just a quick heads up on anyone travelling in the near future, I am just back from 2 weeks travelling in Germany, Austria and Italy and was somewhat miffed and shocked by the discrepancy in excess baggage rates being applied at various airports at present. Clearly this is a mechanism that the airlines are seeking to claw back the rising fuel costs against pre-paid ticket prices. There is now a "gotcha" clause embedded in the cheapo airline websites referring to excess baggage charge at the current daily rate and excess baggage charges are being more vigorously enforced.
Europe currently seems to range between Eu15 to Eu25 per 1 kilo excess baggage. I read recently that the trans-Atlantic excess is as high as £45 per 1 kilo.
Before travelling I would urge people to check out by phone your current excess rates, as what is shown on websites is now hopelessly out of date especially if you are comparing against 1 or two months ago, or last year's prices.
