This is kinda like closing the gate after the cows are out, but I still would like to know.

What's the difference between a "Quick Format" and "Format"? I got a new HD yesterday. At first I tried Quick Format. It only took a minute or so. That scared me a little being that fast so I formatted again using just Format, which took over 3 1/2 hours.

Did I waste my time using Format vs. Quick Format, or is there a real difference?

A full format scans the disk for bad partitions while a quick format just removes the files and directories and does not do the scan.
For a new HD you should do the full format so that any bad sectors will be marked and not used
