Now I was told the name of these randy little so'n so's, but, like most of my attributes, few that they ever were, my memory ain't what it was
Having a stab at id from the UK Butterflies site I'm going for Small Heath - Coenonympha pamphilus, though please correct me if I'm wrong, it's the female that's side on.
Had a wasted 188mile round trip yesterday to Crammer Gutter looking for Gold-ringers and Keeled Skimmers which were distinctively absent but managed to salvage the day with these and a few other little gems on the way home.
Slight sharpness run out on left side of the trailing wing edge but can't be helped.
EDIT: Yeah, yeah I know the BG isn't making the image pop, but it's kind of hard when everything around the subject is bloomin' brown!
Besides, you never heard of subtlty.......lololol!!!!!!!!!!
Nice one - yes Small heaths
You should have let me know you were coming down. I might have been able to help.Thats my local stamping ground.
Cheers
John

Hi Andy. Its a nice shot, but the BG is almost the same colour as the subject, so I am straining to look for the edges, if you know what I mean - there isn't much 'pop' to the image. Sorry you had such a fruitless trip - is this a common experience among photogs here? Has there been a noticeable decline in the winged insects this year?
so'n-sos Andy
I don't mind the bg at all. Nice to see one of the less dramatic butterflies on here and you have done plain-Jane justice too. I like it a lot. That tiny bit of missing sharpness that you are whittling on about is barely noticeable - relax a bit.

Thanks for looking folks as ever
Lovely sharp image.
I do feel that if the background was slightly different colour it may make the subject pop a little more.

There is a most definate decline in winged insects this year, but still hoping that things will improve once we have gotten Autumn out of the way...
Cracking image! I find the complimentary background adds to the image not take away from, IMO of course!

Nice image.
