Over the Fourth, my family & I went to Pictured Rocks. This was my third trip and my first time taking one of the boat tours. Shooting from Lake Superior is about the only way to get a decent shot of Bridal Veil Falls. It would have been nice to be able to set up a tripod in fifty feet of water, so as to get a better, sharper shot, and to shoot later in the day, but you take what you can get, right? ;)

I think Gitzo is developing a tripod based on deep water oil drilling technology. It collapses down to two feet long, so the upper legs are about 18 inches in diameter.
Let's see, you would have to have control over the timing of the boat tour, the level of swells on Lake Superior, as well as dictating to the pilot exactly what you needed done in boat positioning.
Yep, I'd say you did a darn good job given the conditions. So many variables out of our control.
Short of getting in a kayak (which would bring its own challenges), there's simply not much you could do regarding the conditions. I agree that you did well given what you had to work with. Pictured Rocks was one of the first "serious" photo trips that I took when I first began shooting (about 3 years ago now), and I've been longing to get back there ever since. It's truly a remarkable area. Nice work and thanks for sharing this Tim!

You mean you had no control over the conditions on Lake Superior?
While not perfect, it's still a good shot of the falls, Joel...thanks for sharing it. I'd love to take that boat tour someday.
