I like what you're trying to convey here. In the first image, the flower is well positioned and prominent, yet it's only part of the picture. I like that the precarious trail is visible and nicely captured. I think the scene as a whole really shows the environment where the flower is growing. In the second image, the flower is obviously more prominent, but the right side is quite over-bearing now because of the extreme out of focus and really takes away from the nice presentation of the flower.
I think you succeeded in creating a nice environmental image in the first.
