I recently bought the Tamrac Expedition 8x with the thought that when the wife and I are traveling by plane we can use one bag. After getting the 8x backpack and really like the bag and feel it will foot the bill as being able to combine our gear for travel. The problem I am thinking now will this bag be to big to pass for carry on. Does anyone have this bag or one of equal size and had any carry on experiance with this size of bag?
Thanks

Dennis:
Haven't had any problems with U.S. or foreign carriers with the Expedition 5. Expedition 5 will not fit in the overhead area of small commuter planes. I don't remember the relative sizes of Expedition 5 and 8.

If you go to the Tamrac site and follow the links to the Expedition series, they list the 8 as carry-on compatible.

I haven't used it, but I fly regularly with its predecessor 787. My experience with that pack puts quotation marks around "carry-on" compatible. It will fit in overhead bins on most full-size jets such as the 737-400 and newer, but only if you empty the external pockets and leave the shoulder straps and waist belt disconnected so you can swing them to the side. Works for me, but the things in your external pouches have to go into your checked backs or the pockets of your jacket.

As for smaller commuter planes, there's not much that will fit in their overhead bins. My wife and I both carry Adventure 9 packs when we know we'll be on smaller planes and we're not carrying lenses longer than 300mm. Those won't fit in the overhead bins of a DeHavelin Dash 8, but fit nicely under the seat in front of you. At the time we bought the 9's, the 10's weren't made yet. The 10 is larger, and I don't know how well it would fit in the Dash.
