One of my target species on a recent June lake Umbagog trip was the black-backed woodpecker, a boreal bird of dead and dying spruce flats and bogs. I had no luck. Fortunately closer to home, an early morning visit to an Adirondack bog gave me an eye-level in my face encounter. Of the suite of northwoods boreal birds, this is the one species I've seen at times for five years up high and never had a great opportunity until now.

Another great shot, Jeff. I don't think I've seen one of these before.

Hi Jeff! Very nice shot! I had a chance to get a few shots of them one summer in an eye level nest feeding a young male. That was cool! The chick was NEVER quiet!! Forever hungry, I guess.
