Planning a four day get away with the family Aug 7-10th. I am thinking of the Red Feater Lakes area. I am not familiar with that area so any info on photo ops, improved camping (showers etc) much appreciated. As an alternate I am thinking the Never Summer Mountains area but I am concerned about the condition of the trees. Suggestions appreciated!

John,
Its been so long since I've been up there that I'm not really sure what's up there. But I think it is very camping oriented from what I remember. Here is a site that might help you get started.
John - my in-laws live in Red Feather Lakes and we spend quite a bit of time up there. I don't know of any campgrounds with showers. The main campgrounds are at Dowdy Lake and West Lake. It's a beautiful setting with sunrise and sunset opportunities all around the lakes, though you're not looking at dramatic mountain views from there. Those views of the Never Summers are accessible, though you'll have to head out of town or do some hiking to get them. I'm not in photo mode when I'm up there, so I don't have any specific spots that I know to be great mountain photo ops; hopefully others will have more specific information. I have hiked Mt. Margaret and Middle or South Bald Mountain and recall that the vistas were pretty nice.
If you can't find a campground/KOA with showers, you should try searching on vacation rentals in Red Feather Lakes. There are a lot of vacation homes up there, and properties that people have been unable to sell that are vacant; I'd suspect that they'd try to rent them out for the summer.
I was up in that area last fall... The Lost Lake area is pretty photogenic. There is camping in the vicinity, but it's primitive. I think you'll find the more developed camping around the lakes, as mentioned previously. Here's a link to camping around West Lake:
