Barred Owl Environment
I was really buzzing when I spotted this handsome guy sitting alongside the road I turned the car around and used the car as a hide seven or eight minutes elapsed and 300 shots later.

Now IMHO finding species within their environment makes it for me after all I'm just passing by and looking in. What a treat.

Can I pose yet another question lens preferences I'm using a sigma 50mm-500mm and would dearly like to obtain more glass any suggestions please considering the Kansas environment? Or am I trying to run before I can walk?

Canon 1D3 sigma 50mm-500mm ISO200 f/6.5 1/800 HH from vehicle.

Critique and advice most welcome.

Thanks

Barry

Wow Barry, sounds like you had that motor drive working overtime getting some shots of this beauty. Good eyes to pick it out of the surroundings.

I don't know what your price range is but I recently saw some info on Canon's 1200mm lens ... a mere $99,000. Of course if you had one you could have shot this fellow from the UK!

Can't help much on Canon glass, but this image is fantastic! I don't know of anything that would improve this. Very nice!

Nice pic. Are you looking for longer or better glass?

If you are looking for better glass you can't lose with the canon 500mm F4 IS. With good long lens technique your images will be awesome.

The sigma can produce some good images but that much zoom is bound to degrade the IQ.

I think better glass to avoid high % crop to improve IQ. Small subjects at a distance are the problem for me.

Barry,

Good evening. GREAT picture. It looks like he / she just sat there for you.

I laughed when you said “seven or eight minutes elapsed and 300 shots later”, because every time I do that I swear that I can’t remember taking all those pictures.

I use a Canon XTi with a Canon 300 mm 4.0 L IS with a Canon 1.4 tc, which give me approx 420 mm. So your 500 has me beat, but most of my shots are hand held.

Very nice, Barry. I've had the pleasure of using a 500 f/4 IS, and it was wonderful. I did miss the flexibility of a zoom lens though. I'd like to try the new 800mm IS lens :). However, both of the above prime lens are way beyond my budget.

Rob

It makes sense to try before buying I'd like to rent one for a month. With the pound $ exchange they are half the price here compared to the UK.
