This is a nice shot, but I'm not entirely sure about the composition, maybe a vertical crop would work better? How are you finding the d700 generally? I would like one myself, although I'm not sure the FX format gives any benefit to most nature photography work due to the reduced reach and depth of field.
Hi Dan.
The reduced reach is an issue, but one where i'll have to improve my skill to work one i think. I've never had issues with DOF, except macro. The image was just a test to see how the D700 performed with my mix of lenses.
My only drawback atm is the issue with the 500 and a TC. Oh and a huge glob of oil or something on the sensor!
The camera handles just like it should, quick responsive, and the images are very good to ISO1600 after which they become more D300/D2X like at the higher ISO's
Really interesting angle Paul and unusual colours. Not sure what the BG is doing to the right of the stem in the top half - looks like a couple of "clone trails" or is it an object?

4 repliesFirst images from my D700 hacked nef;s to work in C1 until they release a new version.
Major you noted the D3 tended to get oil or muck on the sensor? I have a glob and its only taken 100 images!
Also has anyone used a D3 with the Sigma 500mm with a TC, did it take over a second to focus lock if you did?
Other than this how does it look to everyone?
Here is the image at 100%
