Nikon 200-400mm Lens Question

I have just received my new copy of this lens and have not had time to test it yet. It comes with the protective filter attached but I am used to shooting my big lenses without filters for the maximum image quality.

Has any one tested this lens with and without the supplied filter to see if there is a difference in image quality?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,
I never have used it, always shoot without--an awesome lens, you gonna love it.

Hmmmm...???? I didn't get a "protective filter' with mine. Do you mean the drop in filter? If so, it should be in place when shooting. Also, don't forget to take out the clear plastic sleeve that is inside of the lens hood or you will get some nice reflections when shooting towards the light. It can be hard to see sometimes.

Current models are being shipped with a proprietary Nikon NC miniscus glass protective filter already installed on the lens and a pouch to put it in if you remove it. It attaches and/or removes just like any normal lens filter. It is reportedly not a flat piece of glass but slightly curved. I was just wondering if it affected IQ. I've been told on another site that it is there to protect the front element on the 200-400, which is reportedly ED glass and rumored to be "softer" than standard elements. All greek to me but most say to leave it in place.

Hi Mike, Well, I just went and looked at mine and it DOES have a screw on front filter. Boy am I a dummy. I was wondering what that little pouch was for. I've been using mine with the filter on for about six months now and I can tell you that it has always taken very sharp photos and rivals the 500mm vr. So far I guess it hasn't hurt. You are gonna love this lens. :wavey:

I love this lens. The filter has been in place since day one. Did Charlie already say you will love this lens??

Hi Mike, Mac again,

Thanks guys for rattling my cage--got to thinking that I haven't removed the front filter on mine either--duh!!! So anyway what I said before is correct, except the filter is in place!!! Does rival the 500 vr!! Just awesome. Sorry 'bout that.

I've never taken mine off since day one and never experienced an problems with IQ. I believe it is to protect the front element and allows a cheaper alternative to replacing the whole lens if it gets a deep scratch on it or the like!

Well, as the saying goes, you learn something new everyday......and as Homer would say "Doh!". Had this lens about a year now and never realised there was a filter on it, at last the mystery of the little bag is solved.....thanks
