Anni and I are expecting our first child together. It's due around the 1st of January.

That's all for now. Just thought I'd mention it. Quite an exciting time for us. Let the jokes about parenthood and my photography profession begin. :wavey:

Congratulations! Lots of non photographic but very enjoyable work ahead for you Marc. I know, I've raised 3, all are out of the house now.

Marc, congrats! That is great news. I know you only prefer Landscape work but you won't be able to stop yourself from getting into taking timeless intimate photos of your kids. I did not think I would enjoy it as much as I do but my daughter who is now almost 2 got me really to enjoy it. And now it's a significant part of our photo business (which I am sure that won't be your case). I can see it already... baby adamus holding the tripod for daddy in the field. It will happen! My daughter at 1 1/2 was already picking up my tripod and take it to me when I would head out. And my tween son is now often my assitant!

Again, congrats!

My most sincere congrats to you and Anni! My two boys are a constant source of fun, happiness and comedy.

OK, I'll take the first dig...perhaps the extra responsibility around the home will cut into your productivity a bit so that you are only three or four times more productive than the rest of us?

Trust me, raising a child will be much more gratifying than anything you can/will accomplish in photography. My daughter is 15, my how time flies, and I have had to cut way back on the time I spend in the field, basically relegating photography to a hobby rather than the career it once was. However, it was my choice to make and I would make that same choice again. Enjoy the times ahead!

It wasn't planned, obviously. I never wanted kids, but that's life for you, eh? I'm looking forward to the experience of it anyway. You can't fight things you can't change, you just have to grow and adapt. I have a pretty good situation right now, so we'll be fine. It's true kids can teach you a lot about life. In no way am I sacrificing my career for it though, or my first love - the wilderness. Anni wouldn't have it any other way and neither would I.
My own father took me out hiking when I was 2. He used to bribe me with carrots and crackers. Growing up, hiking with my dad, those were fond memories. I look forward to sharing that experience with my own child someday as well.

Marc, I agree it's never too early to get kids out on the trail. I don't know how old I was the first time Dad took me hiking, but I have been hiking since I can remember.

Since I am currently dealing with teenagers, I will not only offer my congratulations, but also my condolences :jump:

Hey, that's great, Marc--congrats! My earliest memories are also of hiking (in CA). Just do me a favor and dont bring the kid on any planes for a while.

Marc, remember: when you take shots on delivery day in the hospital, the lighting is fairly even-toned... you won't need an ND Grad no matter how bright your new child's eyes are.

Seriously, a huge super congratulations to both of you!

Way to go Mark. I'm sure Anni will be understanding in your pursuit of your career. :toast:

Hearty congrats - my wife and daughter (now 7 3/4) are coming with me to Mount Rainier and then on to the Olympics for a week of camping fun. She can now hike into the miles area so we'll see how they do. Trust me this will be one of the best things to ever happen to you - it's a line in the sand where there was a life before your child and then life after your child is in the world. Everything is the same but totally different in the best of ways..... cheers to Anni and you.

That's crazy and unexpected, but certainly I send a big congrats and best wishes your way. :toast: If you can be half as skilled at parenting as you are at photography, you'll be exceptional.

A child brings many years of fun into your life - even though they may be sleepy ones. Congrats from someone who is just passing through that sleepy phase now.

Remember, when taking pics of the family, don't forget to let yourself be in them as well...

Congratulations to the both of you.

Photography is about to change for you ...

It's due around the 1st of January.

That's unusual. A surprising number of children seem to arrive around nine months after that date.

If my youngest daughter is any guide, he or she will be asking to "borrow" your camera on walks or hikes in about six years. Make sure you hang on to an older body/lens combo the next time you upgrade!
Posted by Erik Stensland on August 5, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Marc, I'm really excited for you. We weren't really planning to have children either and my little boy is the greatest gift I could ever have. Everything will need to change in your lives, but you can be sure that it is worth the sacrifice. It is something to which no photo or career can compare. Perhaps this will slow you down just a tad so that the rest of us have a chance to try to at least catch your shadow. Congratulations Marc! :toast:

Damn, how did I miss this one? (Thanks for bumping it Roman.)

I can easily say that the best and most rewarding decisions I've made in my life were to marry my wife and have my two daughters.

Congrats to you and Annie!

p.s.- Don't blink, the years go by way too fast with the little ones.
