The Sony 11-18 has NOT received good reviews so far, in terms of flare and optical quality, from what I've seen.

I keep hearing wonderful things about the Sigma 10-20 (for a cropped sensor) or the Sigma 12-24 (for cropped & full sensor).

I use the Sigma 10-20 on my Canon 40D and have had no problems with it at all, it is a great piece of glass both in build quality and picture quality.

Jeff,
I did a field test of the A700 with the 16-80 Zeiss (see Nature's Best, Spring 2008). I know it is not a super wide lens, but it was an excellent performer, very sharp, corner to corner with almost zero distortion. The build quality was good, but not fantastic. I never had the opportunity to test any of their other lenses though.

Jeff,

I have an a700 and used a sigma 10-20 (until I sold it yesterday, not a FF lens) and it's a very fine wide angle lens! If you do not intend to go FF I can definetly recommend it! However, ask yourself how often you go below the 16mm mark ( I do not, thats why for the FF im just going with a 24-70, and yes I shoot landscapes a lot) If so get the 16-80, there where some reports on flaky lenses, but those issues seem to be solved right now (keep in mind this is also not a FF lens).
