I picked up a D700 and this was taken on the first "shake out" outing. I'm loving the FX! The IQ is about the same as the D300, but the composition and visualization is much easier using the great big viewfinder. So far, I'm VERY Happy!

This is nicely done Edward and congrats on the new camera!! Super light in this to give the whole image a strong three dimensional effect! Very groovy and no nits from me!!

Well done!

What's larger about the viewfinder? I thought that it only shows 95% of the image, while the D300's viewfinder is closer to 100%. Am I missing something in the specs?

Thanx

Hi Dave, The D300 VF is 100% coverage and .95 magnification. The D700 is 95% coverage and .74 magnification. But 95%/.74 of an FX frame is a lot different in use than 100%/.95 of a DX frame. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the size of the frame you begin with. Or to put it another way, .95 of 10 is still much less than .74 of 30. (To use arbitrary numbers.)

But forget all the math and specs, shoot both side by side and there is just no comparison.

Wow, nice shot. That camera seems to have pretty nice IQ too.

nice image.....

my guess is dollar for dollar the better value is with the D300.........Ill match you prints up to 20x30 in terms of quality anyday.......unless they are night shots.......:) :toast:

Hi Darren, Yes the D300 is a great value, and I'm sure that the IQ will be about equal. But the D700 and FX is about MORE than just the end IQ. Some things are difficult to value, and I think each individual has to place value where they see fit.

I really did miss my primes a lot, and the whole DX/FX debate on whether to keep DX lenses into the future or should I buy FX lenses has just vanished. The move to the D700 was pretty easy considering I had a bunch of FX primes sitting unused on a shelf...

Very nice Edward......and I would agree if you had the FX lenses already then it's a smart move.......

I could go either way, I still have my Nikon F4s and now the D300.....I value each for different reasons and features.....but when the end result is a framed and matted print......Ill take the simplicity of the D300.......

and chances are when Nikon finally comes up with a new D3x or something, I will upgrade......

Cheers
