Hiked up to Glass Lake and Sky Pond in Rocky this morning for sunrise, shot this of Timberline Falls on the way down. If it looks a little soft, I didn't add any sharpening, in order to keep the file size manageable. The original file is sharp throughout.
Cool, some awesome subject material. Im wondering about the top though, seems a little uncomfortable with the top of the falls hitting the upper edge. Might be the white border though that's throwing me. I have yet to get to Sky Pond--so many spots, so little time. Im hoping to make the San Juans before the flowers all dissapear.

Todd....great composition and nice flowers. One I also wish to explore Sky pond...your picture is tempting me...regards, Rajeev.
Todd,
With all due deference to Stan, I have to disagree with him on this one. My experience in viewing "intimate nature" shots has been that some amputation of an element takes place. I seem to remember this from Elliot Porter, and Ansel Adams, among others.
I think your foreground is exceptionally strong, and your placement of the lower portion of the falls just to the left of the flowers balances the comp, as well as leads the eye to the upper portion. Then there are the rocks framing the falls and anchoring everything to the middle. Yeah, I like it.

Love the color and lines of the falls dropping into the flowers. Great comp! I like it as is.
god those flowers look so great, I have really been wanting to get out to get some good shots with the flowers, but the medication I am taking makes me soooo dang drousy, I am stuck at home all the time.
very nice Todd...sweet comp..................... and is there really a Colorado Day?

Yup, August 1st is officially Colorado Day.

You found a great spot, Todd, with the Falls and the great flowers. Ok, I have put this on my 'must stand here' map for Timberline . What time did you start the hike?

Hey Paul, I hit the trail at 3:40am, and made it to the top of the falls, which is where the edge of Glass Lake is, with just a couple of minutes to spare before the 6am sunrise. Not that it mattered, as the haze made first light so weak that it took a few more minutes to even be able to distinguish night from day.
I shot this on the way down from Sky Pond and Glass Lake. The falls actually stayed in the shade til almost 9am, and the later into the year we get, the later the shade will remain.
A killer iconic CO summer image. The soft light and rich colors are outstanding!

Beautiful, Todd, but it looks a little soft ;-)

Nice job. I hiked to Sky Pond a couple of weeks ago, but not quite as early as you did! (6:30 start vs. 3:30).
Sorry that the sunrise didn't fully reward your effort, Todd. I agree with Morris about your comp here. I shot the falls at a wider angle when I went by and didn't get the flowers as close in the frame as a result since Timberline is a somewhat large waterfall. Was there still any columbine left above Glass Lake when you hiked?

Classic shot Todd. No nits from me other than the sharpening issue. That web size limit can be a real pain with flower shots.

A very pleasing summer scene - the flowers make for an exceptional foreground. A great way to start any day; perfect for Colorado day!
