I think I have found an easier way to photograph butterflies. Wait until they stop for the proverbial cigarette. They don't move so much then!
The light was a bit harsh and I would have got away with it if the wings hadn't been curled up but even so, I felt the shot wasn't too bad.
These seem to be one of the butterflies that have been fairly prolific this year along with other grassland species such as gatekeepers and meadow browns. Everything else seems to have been very thin on the ground (at least around here). I doubt if I have seen 10 small tortoiseshells all year.

C&C valued and welcome as always. Eric

Bit contrasty as you say, but a pleasing comp and a nice capture
The thing that really distracts is bokeh on those grass stems - report to the front of the class on wednesday

Yes - a good shot and positioning in the frame.

Hi Eric,
That's just greedy - two of them in the same frame! Both in focus too! Very nice! The boken is mildly distracting but one I'd be happy to have on file!
I've also noticed a lot of Ringlets around here Eric, it's certainly been a good year for them. No shortage of Small Skippers around Lount either. Not a great deal else around, as you say. You've done well with this shot, it must have been a challenge to get them both fully in focus. The only negatives are the harsh light and the slightly distracting background, neither of which you could do much about.

Nice find and you've done well to keep them both in focus, and nice and sharp.
