older video adapter with widescreen ?

Is it possible that my c.2001 video adapter (Intel 82815) does not support a wide screen monitor? I couldn't even buy a non-widescreen monitor off the shelf at Staples, so I got a 19" widescreen, but no mater which resolution I choose everything is stretched in the horizontal dimension.

Pete - While it is possible, my first guess is that you have an out of date driver. Have you tried to download the most up to date driver for your video card?
