The hummingbird migration is in full swing in central Kansas, and will only get better for the next month or so :). I haven't had any in my yard yet, but it will happen. I photographed this immature Rufous Hummingbird in Larned, 20 miles west of home. Rufous Hummingbirds are relatively common during fall migration in our part of the state.
Larned is a hot spot for hummers, and even more importantly there are knowledgeable observers spotting the odd hummers. A friend's garden is well known for attracting odd hummers. I've made 2 trips over in the last week for two of these oddities, a Broad-tailed Hummingbird and a Calliope Hummingbird. I've put up a gallery with pics of 4 species of hummers http://gallery.heartland-images.com/2008PNHummers .
Thanks for looking, C&C always welcome and appreciated.
Nice shot Rob... The oof dark background gives a nice contrast and makes the bird stand out. We have had a lot of hummers where we are in MO - but our feeders are in the sunlight and the closest background (other than the house) is 500 yards away. Nice detail on the head and the catchlight in the eye works. I don't think we have had any hummers called Rufus - but I'm sure there are some named "Bubba" !!!!

What a nice example. I'm still struggling to perfect my efforts with these fantastic species.

Rob, I really like this shot, you must have been shooting a pretty fast shutter speed to capture this one.

Thanks guys. The techs on this were f/8, ISO 800, 1/250. Tough shooting conditions in most of hummers favorite perches. Even on the tomato cages, the light fades fast due to neighborhood trees.
