Oregon Pics - Painted Hills and Alvord Desert
A little outside the RMNP territory, but I wanted to share a few pics from "home". Still feels weird thinking of Oregon as home, but we are thoroughly enjoying the climate and scenery. While CO has been breaking records for consecutive 90+ degree days, we're mostly enjoying highs in the low to mid 70s.

We didn't get out much during the spring as house projects had us preoccupied, but we took a long weekend in June and briefly toured parts of central and eastern OR.

This first image is from the Borax Hot Springs, near the Alvord Desert just east of the Steens Mountains. The springs are a series of pools of varying size - from teakettle to jacuzzi - and are deceptively welcoming, with steam gently rising from the calm surface. But, they are near boiling, are very deep in places, and a fall into one of them could easily be fatal.

The Painted Hills are shot here almost as much as Maroon Bells are in CO, but we couldn't resist swinging by. It was drab and overcast all day; then about an hour before sunset, a seam appeared above the western horizon and we got quite a light show. This is on the D2X, but I also captured on the 4x5.

One more from the Painted Hills. I actually backed down on the saturation, especially in the reds - it was intense light.

They definitely look like Rick Dunn images, but the locations seem all wrong.

They really are quite nice Rick. Glad to hear that you're enjoying it now because the constant drizzle will be kicking in soon.

Very nice. Makes me kinda sad the price of gas kept me from returning to Oregon this summer. :wavey:

Rick,
I guess M A , and Z S, and C P, and S B in the PNWP forum have some heavy competition now. This is at least as good as their work. That last one absolutely blows me away.

Rick #2 rocks! Excellent composition, great texture with the wonderful grasses in the foreground, the clouds, light and the beautiful curve to the midground hill.

Awesome!

Hey Rick great work! I agree #2 is killer! It is cool there? Price of gas coming down! Where's my keys! Glad you are getting settled in there and finding some shoot time!

Rick these are fantastic! I always love images of this area, and you have certainly come away with some of the best I have ever seen. Image 2 and 3 are my faves, just too hard to pick a favorite between them!
