Here is a rework of one of the pics at http://gallery.heartland-images.com/2008PNHummers . Among the changes I selected the bird and the cage so I could work on them separate from the background. Is it too obvious? Any other comments/suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks for looking.

Rob, I like seeing the proportion of the wings to the hummer's body and the bg is very complimentary to the bird's coloration. There seems to be a fair amount of noise in the image, particularly in the bg. What were your shooting specs?

This one works for me great detail.
My efforts are not getting there as yet still struggling with the light.
The light is the big issue. I had to use ISO 800, f/6.3, 1/500; I was still hand holding the lens because I hadn't set up the tripod yet when the bird appeared. I've tried using gaussian blur on the background to kill some of the noise, but it looks like I need to work on it some more.

I've been shooting hummers in South Arkansas for a month and have had very few clear, sunny days in which to capture them. It has been cloudy or overcast most of August. Very strange. It is hard to capture them at fast shutter speeds without lots and lots of light . . . even with an f/2.8 fast lens.
Flash fill helps some, but tends to wash out the background at anything above -2/3rd ev. I have resorted to using studio lights with blue gel to get minimum lighting on my deck.
