American Bittern
This is my 1st posting for the NE region. It's been a pleasure viewing everyone's work.

I have heard it's call many times, but never seen one here in VT. This American Bittern was standing in a field not far from my home. I had to do a double take to make sure that what I was seeing was indeed a Bittern. I've seen deer, fox, coyotes, but never a bittern. With all the rain we had, perhaps frogs and other aquatic specimens were more readily available. Their ability to remain unseen is quite remarkable, with their ability to expand and contract their necks. I used a Canon 40D with a 100-400 Is at 400mm. Any comments are welcome.

Great capture. I've only seen them one in Florida.

Mitch, I like the way you cropped and framed the subject. We have these birds on Long Island too, though it's been a long time since I've had a chance to get out and pursue them.

Welcome to NEPN Mitch!!! This is a great shot!! I like the curve of it's head and your choice of DOF to keep the foreground grasses in focus. Good job!! Looking forward to seeing more!!

Wecome and Nice shot, Mitch.

When we see them in the Florida wetlands, they are almost always in the same pose that you've caught - masters of camouflage.
