This is a detail shot made in early morning back in July. I have always liked the abstract quality of these wierdly eroded sandstone formations.

Tachihara 4x5
180mm Fujinon
Astia 100F

Your thoughts are always appreciated.

I like this one, Preston. I have done some hiking around Salt Point SB, and found some really ridiculous tafoni.

Nice study in texture Preston. I'd agree that Salt Point has some crazy ones.

 These are always an interesting item to review. Nature sure has some amazing structures for us to photograph. These scenes have always given me thoughts of the Borg Collective on the Star Trek series of old. Really some very nice work again, Preston.

Cool detail in the rocks. A nice display of the geologic forces at work.

I really like this Preston. I think you've isolated a well balanced comp here. The tafoni if fascinating stuff. Now although the exposure and color look great and natural, my personal taste would like to see this a tad warmer. But that's just me. Nice work.

I enjoyed your shots. There's more tafoni a bit closer to you in San Mateo County at Pebble Beach (not the golf one).

Thanks for your comments, you guys. Lon, I'll punch up the warmth a bit. This was lit by an early morning blue sky.

Warren, my bride and I were visiting relatives in Gualala, so I snagged the opportunity. I would love to get to some of the tafoni formations near Monterey, etc.

I am definitely going to return to the Gualala area! I really want to hit Bowling Ball Beach at a minus tide, and also Salt Point. We stopped at the light on Pt. Arena and the town of Mendocino but the light was very harsh and it was windier than Mojave!

Thanks again,

-P

I went to Bowling Ball beach, but hit it at the wrong tide. It was my only opportunity. Looks like it would be very cool if you could be there at the right time. That whole Mendicino coast area is gorgeous. Unfortunately, it is a long way from my neck of the woods.
